Do, and despair not
Receiving worsening news about climate change, to some extent we choose to be dis-empowered. As Ray Grigg discusses in his post “Well-Informed Futility Syndrome”, for those predisposed to inaction news of this sort is a harbinger of doom. For those inclined to act it is a call to arms. An oversimplification, but as Grigg explains, we do have some choices about which we want to be.

On the most optimistic timetable, there might be US climate legislation in 2013, and a global climate deal in 2014, and we really start reducing emissions by 2015. By then, we would need to be cutting emissions by 5 or 6 percent a year, instead of growing them at 3 percent a year, if we still want to come in under +2 degrees C.

Dutch state sued over new coal power stations
The Dutch state faces legal action from a number of environmental organisations for granting licences for the construction of new coal-fired power plants, reports Monday’s Financieele Dagblad. According to Johan Vollenbroek of the environmental consultancy Mob, the licences are against European environmental regulations.
Climate Change Challenge: Is Clean Coal a Solution?
CCS is a very expensive distraction, designed to make coal look good, but in reality taking scarce taxpayers’ dollars away from solutions that can make a real difference. Governments should place an immediate ban on new non-CCS coal-fired projects, as New Zealand and British Columbia have done, and set a date by which power companies will be required to stop buying coal-fired power, as California has done.
