Stern’s statement is trivially true; any information is a “guidepost.” This particular guidepost informs us that 2oC is almost certainly catastrophic and knowingly going above it is insane. The cavalier manner with which he tosses the statement out, as though we were talking about highway signs advising motorists about rest stops, is criminally irresponsible.
Lying about the science is a “Prescription for Disaster”
Bear in mind they are making that claim about a supposedly “safe” 2oC rise in temperature, a window we have almost certainly already missed thanks to years of the same waffling and foot dragging. As these posts document, we now know that 2oC is NOT safe and that further delay is absolutely suicidal.

There are many, many tens of millions of us in the global North who accept the reality of climate change science. Were we to take meaningful action both personally and politically it would reduce CO2 emissions significantly and shake the political foundations of our societies to the core.
Climate Change, Media Coverage and You
Taken together the stories underscore how vital it is that we pressure media and their advertisers to provide significantly more climate coverage. Further, that they must strive to make the coverage factual and accurate by stopping the farce of “providing balance” to the incoherent ideologues who manufacture claims of scientific controversy, except for the purpose of exposing their frauds and corporate funding.

Staggering as it may be to imagine that so much wealth is concentrated in the hands of a mere 1% of the population, remember that it refers to 1% of the human population in the United States and/or the Industrialized world. When we recognize that those deserving a fair share must include the entire human population, and that this “wealth” comes at the expense of the natural world on which we all depend, then the inequity and absurdity (insanity?) becomes all the more glaring.

Receiving worsening news about climate change, to some extent we choose to be dis-empowered. As Ray Grigg discusses in his post “Well-Informed Futility Syndrome”, for those predisposed to inaction news of this sort is a harbinger of doom. For those inclined to act it is a call to arms. An oversimplification, but as Grigg explains, we do have some choices about which we want to be.

Geoengineering Catch 22, what if the problem is that we don’t even know what the problem is? As such the problem is more of human ignorance and incapacity to make rational choices rather than a technological one per se. If that is the case then clearly “the solution” is education. Obviously we need to get the public to realize that geoengineering is no solution and to understand just how great the risks are, however.
