Dutch state sued over new coal power stations
The Dutch state faces legal action from a number of environmental organisations for granting licences for the construction of new coal-fired power plants, reports Monday’s Financieele Dagblad. According to Johan Vollenbroek of the environmental consultancy Mob, the licences are against European environmental regulations.
Global Warming Solutions for Governments
To stop Global Warming, we must close down all coal-fired power plants, end all fossil fuel subsidies and end all corporate campaign financing.
Climate Change Challenge: Is Clean Coal a Solution?
CCS is a very expensive distraction, designed to make coal look good, but in reality taking scarce taxpayers’ dollars away from solutions that can make a real difference. Governments should place an immediate ban on new non-CCS coal-fired projects, as New Zealand and British Columbia have done, and set a date by which power companies will be required to stop buying coal-fired power, as California has done.
Article on carbon capture and storage misguided
CCS should never be considered a bandaid or quick fix. It should only be attempted in conjunction with a global effort to reduce GHG emissions to zero. It will be difficult enough to sequester what we already have. If we can’t bring atmospheric carbon dioxide down to what is believed to be the safe level of 350 parts per million or less, we won’t have a planet we can live on.
Controlling Climate Change with Geo-Engineering
“Geo-engineering is not a solution,” says Prof Launder, “but it could give the world a chance to come to its senses. In 50 years we’ll have carbon-free energy schemes in place, but we need a solution that can be put into place shortly, and will gain us breathing space.”
We Are the Stewards of Carbon
As we learn more about global warming, we continue to recognize that decreasing industrial emissions of carbon is always the No. 1 priority. In Canada, we have the additional opportunity and responsibility to be effective carbon stewards by maintaining large areas of our boreal forest off-limits to industrial disturbance.
Stanford University Study on Energy Options
A detailed new study from the Atmosphere/ Energy Program at Stanford University examines 10 electric power sources and two liquid fuel options, comparing them by 11 different criteria. The study concludes that ethanol, nuclear, and coal-with- carbon-storage (CCS) are dirty, inefficient, and wasteful compared to wind, direct sunlight, geothermal and ocean energy. These cleaner, inexhaustible sources could eliminate global warming gases, give us energy security and meet the nation’s (and the world’s) energy needs forever, the study concludes.
