Inspirational Whimsy: The Great Flower Pot in the Sky

When you think of our planet, you might consider it as round pot of houseplants, which the Great Gardener in the Sky has named, appropriately, Earth. He or She, or It, could have called us “Dirt” or “Soil” or “Rocky.”
But “Earth” has a nice sound, evocative of breath, youth, growth, and faith. One anagram for this word is “heart.” (Wealth is a “th” word, too, but that’s another subject)
Basically, we humans can think of ourselves as just another houseplant.
Many of us might object to this notion, saying we’re Fauna, and this makes us superior to Flora, which just stand with their limbs outstretched, looking beautiful, while we’re running around the planet killing and eating meat. But let’s not quibble; we’re all living organisms.
This morning, when I walked into my kitchen, I stopped to a halt to gasp at my lovely red cereus in the window, proudly displaying three, huge extravagantly red blooms.
There were originally seven or eight smaller buds, but these were discarded by my plant to save energy for producing three perfect flowers.
Around two and a half million years ago, our Gardener dropped a seed into our “pot,” one that has developed into Homo Sapiens, or us. A lot of species were chucked over the centuries during this process, involving a commitment of immeasurable of time and energy, so that we humans could “flower,” with our enormous intellect and our great capacity for love and creativity.
Our brains have become the most complex known object in the Universe, and that’s no mean feat. Beethoven’s Eroica Symphony is playing in the background as I write, so beautiful, it makes me weep; just one example of what greatness we can achieve.
Yet here we are, after all this time - and trial and error – in danger of “losing it,” of allowing the disruptive forces of runaway climate change to devastate our species and most of the living organisms that share our “pot.”
Let’s not let this happen. We’re becoming beautiful, and with all our faults, we’re worth saving. Let’s fight, let’s shout, let’s shake things to ensure our survival.
And let’s never forget to keep feeding and watering ourselves with the love of others and the natural beauty that surrounds us.
