An example of environmentalist being on the wrong side of the debate is Sen Feinstein's attempts to block large solar projects in Southern California. Groups seeking to protect endangered species like the giant tortoise are not seeing the forest for the trees IMHO.

Climate scientists have recently said that a business as usual carbon emissions scenario will bring droughts to 1/3 of the world, including the American southwest for 1,000 years, with soil moisture content being reduced by 50%.
This would devastate the desert ecosystems that these environmental groups are trying to protect.

The solar projects proposed for the southwest are mostly solar thermal which is one of our best options for renewable energy. When combined with molten salt or other heat storage, these plants can provide steady dispatchable power even at night. Solar thermal or CSP is low tech, quick to build and will provide power at competitive rates. The NREL expects it to be competitive with coal and gas by 2015.
This ability to produce non intermittent energy is crucial to replacing base load coal plants.
