Bill McKibben to be among demonstrators in Washington DC against coal-fired power plants
On March 2, environmentalist Bill McKibben will join demonstrators who plan to march on a coal-fired power plant in Washington D.C. In this article for Yale Environment 360, he explains why he’s ready to go to jail to protest the continued burning of coal.
A follow-up on our previous post on the Heartland Institute
DeSmogBlog.com has researched the funding history of all the organizations that the Heartland Institute has listed as co-sponsors for their 2009 International Conference on Climate Change and has found that over the years these groups have received in excess of $47 million from oil companies and right-wing foundations.
Heartland Institute mounts campaign to get James Hansen fired
Should scientists just turn evidence of dangerous climate change they find over to the politicians and corporate-owned media and expect them to keep us informed and tell up what to do? We should be profoundly grateful to scientists like Dr. James Hansen who are speaking out and taking our side.
Orbiting Carbon Observatory Launch Failure
Nasa’s first dedicated mission to measure carbon dioxide from space failed early this morning following a rocket malfunction. The Orbiting Carbon Observatory (OCO) was intended to help pinpoint the key locations on our planet’s surface where CO2 is being emitted and absorbed.
Global Warming Solutions for Governments
To stop Global Warming, we must close down all coal-fired power plants, end all fossil fuel subsidies and end all corporate campaign financing.
Climate Change Challenge: Is Clean Coal a Solution?
CCS is a very expensive distraction, designed to make coal look good, but in reality taking scarce taxpayers’ dollars away from solutions that can make a real difference. Governments should place an immediate ban on new non-CCS coal-fired projects, as New Zealand and British Columbia have done, and set a date by which power companies will be required to stop buying coal-fired power, as California has done.
Article on carbon capture and storage misguided
CCS should never be considered a bandaid or quick fix. It should only be attempted in conjunction with a global effort to reduce GHG emissions to zero. It will be difficult enough to sequester what we already have. If we can’t bring atmospheric carbon dioxide down to what is believed to be the safe level of 350 parts per million or less, we won’t have a planet we can live on.
Today’s Hot Topic: Solar Power (two articles from BC-SEA)
Guy Dauncey of BC-SEA recited a list of recommendations to boost solar hot water installation in the province. He said these systems should be a requirement for new buildings and individuals should receive a 100 per cent tax credit towards them. Dauncey also called for standardized training for solar installation in colleges and apprenticeship programs.
Controlling Climate Change with Geo-Engineering
“Geo-engineering is not a solution,” says Prof Launder, “but it could give the world a chance to come to its senses. In 50 years we’ll have carbon-free energy schemes in place, but we need a solution that can be put into place shortly, and will gain us breathing space.”
James Hansen: “The Sword of Damocles”
On a per capita basis, the three countries most responsible for fossil fuel carbon dioxide in the air today are the United Kingdom, the United States, and Germany, in that order. They must not pretend to be ignorant of consequences of continuing coal emission, or take refuge in a “carbon cap” or some “target” for future emission reductions
